The Essential 100 (E100®) is a carefully selected list of short Bible passages—50 from the Old Testament and 50 from the New Testament—that provides a fast-paced overview of the Bible.  Most are about 1-2 chapters in length, just the right amount for busy people to read and understand in a few minutes.

The readings cover all the major types of biblical writing including the Historical Books, Poetry and Wisdom, the Prophets, the Gospels, Acts, the Epistles and Revelation.  They’re organized into 20 sets of 5 readings each, so you can see the big picture of the Bible without getting bogged down.  In addition, the readings are undated so you can go through them at any pace, and are usable with any Bible translation.

The concept was first described in a devotional book called The Essential 100 by Scripture Union President Whitney T. Kuniholm.  To date, over 2.5 million people have completed one of the Essential Bible Reading Programs (Essential 100, Essential Jesus or Essential Question).  Scripture Union has developed a range of resources to help any church or group—large or small—complete The Essential 100 Bible reading plan together.
